The UK’s recycling system is undergoing major changes, particularly with new regulations being introduced in England. New Rules in England: Key Changes
Beginning in March 2025, businesses in England with over 10 full-time employees—including hospitals, schools, and other institutions—must comply with stricter recycling rules outlined in Section 57 of the Environment Act 2021.

The new regulations mandate that businesses sort recyclable materials into distinct waste streams, including:
- Dry Recyclable Materials (excluding plastic film):
- Required from March 31, 2025 for businesses with more than 10 employees.
- Effective from March 31, 2027 for those with fewer than 10 employees.
- Materials include:
- Glass
- Metal
- Plastic
- Paper and cardboard
- Food Waste: Must be separated from general waste starting March 31, 2025.
- Plastic Film: Collection required by March 31, 2027.
Specific Rules for Food Waste
From March 2025, businesses will no longer be allowed to use equipment like macerators or enzyme digesters for food waste disposal. Instead, food waste must be separated for proper recycling.
Consequences for Non-Compliance
Businesses that fail to properly sort recyclable materials may face large fines. Local environmental officers or the Environment Agency will likely conduct regular checks to ensure compliance.
